Who should stay in Bari and Trani, and who should look elsewhere?

Bari and Trani work for a night or two around a flight into Bari, a short city and coast break, or a spa stay: six of the 12 confirm a spa. The Bari and Trani area has 12 stays on The Puglia Edit in seven comuni, in estimated price bands 1 and 2. For a pool-first week or a beach, go to another area: only three confirm a pool and none confirms a private beach.

Most of the 12 are city palazzi and hotels, with two masserie and one resort. Eight are four-star in the Regione Puglia accommodation register, Dogana Resort in Molfetta is five-star, and none meets the honeymoon rule.

Which towns are in Bari and Trani, and what is each known for?

Bari’s old town holds the Basilica di San Nicola, and italia.it dates the arrival of Saint Nicholas’s relics in the city to 1087. Frederick II remade the castle between 1233 and 1240, and in the lanes women still make orecchiette by hand.

Dilman Boutique Hotel is a boutique hotel on Via Calefati, and Terranobile Metaresort is a four-star resort in a villa from the 1800s with a spa and a pool. Palazzo Calò, an albergo diffuso in a 16th-century palazzo in the old town, and Masseria Pietrasole Metaresort, a walled masseria on the edge of the city that hosts weddings, are both open all year.

Italia.it calls the cathedral of Trani a jewel of Pugliese Romanesque, and Frederick II built the castle directly facing it.

Palazzo Filisio is a 17th-century palace and four-star hotel that takes small pets on request. Marè Resort occupies Palazzo Telesio, built in 1761, with 13 rooms designed by Culti and no pets.

Further along the coast, Barletta has the Colossus, a bronze statue from the 4th century AD, and Molfetta an old Romanesque cathedral with pyramidal domes. Grand Hotel Terme in Margherita di Savoia says its thermal waters come from the town’s salt pans. Park Hotel Elizabeth in Bitonto is a four-star hotel in a 19th-century residence among olive groves, vines and cherry trees, with a spa, a pool and weddings for up to 350 guests.

Choosing a base here

When to go

Grand Hotel Terme in Margherita di Savoia publishes thermal spa hours from April to the last Saturday of November, and Hotel Villa in Bisceglie lists its pool and its garden restaurant as summer services. Masseria Pietrasole Metaresort and Palazzo Calò, both in Bari, say they are open all year; for the other ten, opening months are not confirmed, so ask before planning a winter trip.

Getting there

Bari (BRI) is the airport for the whole area, and Masseria Sant'Anna in Bari describes its position as strategic for the airport and the motorways. It also says the center of Bari can be reached by metro or bus, and Palazzo Filisio names Trani station as its nearest railway station. Dilman Boutique Hotel lists a transfer with a driver and Dogana Resort a van transfer. For an estate stay such as Park Hotel Elizabeth in Bitonto, plan on a car.
