Monopoli and Polignano suit a first trip built on two old towns by the sea and the farmland behind them, with a car for the masserie. The area has 13 stays on The Puglia Edit, eight in Monopoli, four in Polignano a Mare and one in Conversano, with estimated prices in bands 1 to 4.
Sights, season and getting around along the whole stretch are in the Andiamo in Puglia guide to the Bari coast (in Italian).
Monopoli’s harbor enters the old town, and buildings have faced its quays since the Middle Ages. A massive castle stands on the Punta Penna promontory, and the cathedral, medieval in origin, was remade in the baroque style.
Italia.it adds that trade wealth paid for the rebuilding of many churches in the 1700s. It describes the coast as low and indented, with hidden coves and long sandy stretches, and the countryside as farmland dotted with old masserie, olive groves and almond trees.
Polignano a Mare is a spread of white houses of medieval origin crowded on a cliff. You enter the old town under the 16th-century Arco Marchesale, also called Porta Grande, which was the only way in until 1780. The sea has carved about twenty caves into the rock.
A statue on the seafront honors the singer Domenico Modugno, born in the town. For what is on, see Andiamo in Puglia’s page for Polignano a Mare, in Italian.
Seven of the 13 are masserie, the historic farm estates of southern Italy, and the others are a resort, three boutique hotels, a palazzo and a hotel. In Monopoli, Masseria Monet and Masseria Santa Teresa both have a spa, and Palazzo Indelli is a palazzo in estimated band 2.
In Polignano a Mare, Borgobianco Resort & Spa Polignano is a resort in band 3 and Masseria Auraterrae a masseria in band 4. Conversano has Corte Altavilla Relais & Charme, a four-star boutique hotel with a spa.
Five of the 13 are five-star in the Regione Puglia register: Borgobianco Resort & Spa Polignano, Don Ferrante Dimore di Charme, Hotel Grotta Palazzese, Masseria Auraterrae and Il Melograno, which carries the luxury designation.
By our estimate, one stay is in band 1, five in band 2, five in band 3 and two in band 4. How we select explains how we estimate a band.
In summer, italia.it says, Lama Monachile, Polignano's cove, is always very crowded. Puglia's regional tourism content on the same portal says the sea is still warm in autumn and the climate mild, and italia.it notes that Polignano's restaurants serve raw seafood dishes all year. None of the 13 stays confirms its opening months, so ask the property before you plan a trip outside summer.
Bari (BRI) is the nearer airport for this area. By train, Borgobianco Resort & Spa Polignano lists Polignano a Mare among its nearest train stations. By car, the stays name these exits: Borgobianco, Polignano a Mare Castellana Grotte; Masseria Auraterrae, Polignano a Mare/Conversano; Palazzo Indelli, the SS 16 exit Monopoli-Alberobello. The old centers of Monopoli and Polignano a Mare are built around harbors and cliffs, so ask your stay about parking before you arrive, and keep the car for the masserie in the countryside. Each stay page shows its distance to both airports when its position is precise.
Monopoli, Polignano a Mare, Conversano, Mola di Bari, Rutigliano, Noicattaro, Turi, Casamassima, Sammichele di Bari.
Monopoli has eight stays, among them Masseria Monet, Masseria Santa Teresa, Il Melograno and Palazzo Indelli. Polignano a Mare has four: Borgobianco Resort & Spa Polignano, Hotel Covo dei Saraceni, Hotel Grotta Palazzese and Masseria Auraterrae. Conversano has Corte Altavilla Relais & Charme.
A car helps. Bari (BRI) is the nearer airport for this area, and the masserie stand in the countryside. The old centers of Monopoli and Polignano a Mare are built around harbors and cliffs, so ask your stay about parking before you arrive, and check each stay page for how close it sits to town.
Six stays have a spa confirmed on their official sites: Borgobianco Resort & Spa Polignano, Corte Altavilla Relais & Charme, Il Melograno, Masseria Monet, Masseria Paretano and Masseria Santa Teresa. Ask the other seven directly, since a spa there is not confirmed. Sources are on each stay page.
Eight of the 13 stays say on their own sites that they host weddings: Borgobianco Resort & Spa Polignano, Corte Altavilla Relais & Charme, Don Ferrante Dimore di Charme, Hotel Grotta Palazzese, Il Melograno, Masseria Auraterrae, Masseria Paretano and Masseria Santa Teresa. Masseria Auraterrae gives a capacity of 300 guests. Ask the other five whether they host events.
Lama Monachile is the small cove below Polignano's old town and, according to italia.it, its most photographed spot. The bridge behind it stands over a Roman bridge of the Via Traiana, and the cove is always very crowded in the summer months. The same portal counts about twenty sea caves along the cliff.
Italia.it says Monopoli's harbor reaches into the old town, with buildings on its quays since the Middle Ages, and that a massive castle guards the Punta Penna promontory. The cathedral is medieval in origin and was remade in the baroque style. The coast is low and indented, with hidden coves and sandy stretches.
Masseria Paretano is estimated in band 1, under €250 a night for a double room in high season, and five stays are in band 2, among them Masseria Santa Teresa and Palazzo Indelli. Five are in band 3 and two in band 4. No stay here shows a rate we could read, so every band is an estimate.
