Is Santa Maria di Leuca a good base for a first trip to Puglia?

Santa Maria di Leuca is a base for the Cape itself, less so for the rest of Puglia. Italia.it calls it the southernmost point of the Salento and puts it about 70 km (43 mi) from Lecce, so expect long drives to anywhere else. The Cape’s best-known building has its own entry, the Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae sanctuary, described on Andiamo in Puglia (in Italian).

What is there to see at the Cape?

Santa Maria di Leuca is a frazione of Castrignano del Capo, on a promontory where, in italia.it’s words, the Adriatic and the Ionian embrace. The church that gives it its name, first a sanctuary and now a basilica, is also called Santa Maria De finibus terrae, after an old belief that it stood at the limit of all emerged lands.

The present sanctuary dates from 1720, and the lighthouse was built in 1866. Italia.it adds that ships carrying pilgrims to the Holy Land used to sail past the cape.

Leuca is also a busy seaside zone with an old port and a promenade. Fishermen and tourists leave from the port by boat for the caves, and Santa Maria di Leuca lies inside the Costa Otranto - Santa Maria di Leuca e Bosco di Tricase regional park.

The comune of Gagliano del Capo describes the Ciolo, a deep gorge crossed by a bridge from the 1960s. A path of about 4 km (2.5 mi) on foot starts inland and ends in the small rocky bay at the bottom.

What kinds of stay are at Leuca, and what do they cost?

The ten stays are of six types: three masserie, two boutique hotels, two palazzi, a resort, a hotel and a villa. Four are in estimated price band 1, among them Hotel L’Approdo, which confirms a private beach.

Masseria Palane, a masseria (historic farm estate), Masseria Fano Relais & Wine, an agriturismo of eight suites near Salve that says pets are welcome, and Relais Carlo Alberto, a restored old dimora (historic house) of four rooms in Salve, are in estimated price band 2. Tenuta Montirò, a resort, is in band 3. La Dimora delle Fate, a boutique hotel, and Palazzo Daniele, a palazzo (historic townhouse), are in band 4.

All ten bands are estimates, and How we select explains how we set them. La Dimora delle Fate publishes a suite rate with no season, which cannot stand in for a high-season double, so its band is an estimate too.

Three stays have a spa. Two of them, La Dimora delle Fate and Palazzo Daniele, meet the rule of the honeymoon collection.

Only Tenuta Montirò says it hosts weddings, while Palazzo Daniele and Relais Carlo Alberto offer the whole property for exclusive use. Only Masseria Fano and Palazzo Daniele confirm their opening months, so read Puglia in autumn and winter before you plan a trip outside summer.

Puglia's regional tourism content on italia.it says the sea is still warm in autumn and the climate mild. For walking, the comune of Gagliano del Capo describes the Sentiero del Ciolo as a path of about 4 km (2.5 mi), with free access, not suited to people with reduced mobility.

Getting there

Brindisi (BDS) is the airport Masseria Palane names, and Bari (BRI) is the alternative if the connection from your city is better. By train, Palazzo Daniele says the nearest railway station is Lecce. Italia.it calls Santa Maria di Leuca the southernmost point of the Salento and puts it about 70 km (43 mi) from Lecce, so the drive is part of the trip. By car, Masseria Palane gives the SS 101 towards Gallipoli, exit Patù-San Gregorio. A car is the practical way to reach the stays and the coast, hired or arranged as a transfer with your stay.
