Where to stay in Puglia: every area compared

The short version

No single base fits every trip in Puglia, because the region is long and its areas differ. The Puglia Edit covers 169 stays in 14 areas, each checked against official sources. For a first trip with a car, the Valle d'Itria, with 18 stays among the trulli, is next to Fasano, Ostuni and Monopoli. Lecce suits a baroque city with the sea nearby. A week works well with two bases.

Where should I stay in Puglia?

No single base fits every trip, because Puglia is a long region. For a first visit with a car, start in the Valle d’Itria or one of the areas around it, and for a baroque city with the sea within reach, base yourself in Lecce. For a week, use two bases, one in the north and one in the Salento.

The Puglia Edit covers 169 stays in 14 areas, each checked against official sources, as of October 27, 2026. Eight areas are the core of the list, and six were added when we widened it to every part of Puglia: the Gargano, Bari and Trani, the Alta Murgia, Taranto, Brindisi and the Foggia area.

How do the 14 areas compare?

The 14 areas hold between 9 and 18 stays each, and the Valle d’Itria is the largest with 18. The table counts the stays on The Puglia Edit in each area and what their official sites confirm. It describes our selection and ranks nothing.

Area Stays Price bands (estimated) Pool Spa Weddings Airports
Valle d’Itria 18 1 to 3 13 4 6 Bari, Brindisi
Fasano and Savelletri 12 2 to 5 8 7 7 Bari, Brindisi
Ostuni and the White Coast 11 1 to 4 8 3 3 Brindisi, Bari
Monopoli and Polignano 13 1 to 4 6 6 8 Bari
Lecce and the North Salento coast 9 1 to 5 6 5 1 Brindisi
Otranto and the Adriatic Salento 13 2 to 4 9 5 4 Brindisi
Gallipoli and the Ionian Salento 13 2 to 4 11 6 5 Brindisi
Santa Maria di Leuca and the Cape 10 1 to 4 8 3 1 Brindisi
Gargano 12 1 to 2 12 2 3 Bari
Bari and Trani 12 1 to 2 3 6 4 Bari
Alta Murgia and Castel del Monte 10 1 to 2 2 1 6 Bari
Taranto and the Ionian coast 12 1 to 2 8 5 8 Brindisi, Bari
Brindisi and the Messapian towns 13 1 to 3 7 4 7 Brindisi
Foggia and the Monti Dauni 11 1 5 4 4 Bari

Price bands run from 1, under €250 a night for a double room in high season, to 5, over €1,200. Only three of the 169 stays, all in the Foggia area, take their band from a rate on their own site; every other band is our estimate from positioning, and How we select explains how.

Four of the older areas sit between Bari and Brindisi: the Valle d’Itria, Fasano and Savelletri, Ostuni, and Monopoli and Polignano. The other four are in the Salento, the southern part of the region: Lecce, Otranto, Gallipoli and Leuca. Of the newer six, Bari and Trani and the Gargano lie further north, the Alta Murgia inland, Taranto on the Ionian side, and Brindisi between Ostuni and Lecce.

What is each area like?

The Valle d’Itria is the land of the trulli. UNESCO lists the trulli of Alberobello, inscribed in 1996, with 1,030 in Rione Monti and 590 in Rione Aia Piccola.

Our 18 stays here are spread over five comuni, Alberobello, Locorotondo, Cisternino, Martina Franca and Ceglie Messapica, and 13 confirm a pool. It is a base for towns and countryside more than for the sea.

Fasano and Savelletri is one comune of about 40,000 people on the Adriatic, with ten frazioni according to its tourism portal, which lists the Egnazia museum and the Dune Costiere regional park. Seven of our 12 stays host weddings by their own account, seven confirm a spa and three a private beach.

Ostuni and the White Coast centers on the hill town its comune calls the White City, with Villanova as its marine frazione. Our 11 stays are in two comuni, nine in Ostuni and two in Carovigno, and seven of them are masserie.

Monopoli and Polignano pairs two coastal old towns. Italia.it describes Monopoli’s harbor reaching into the old town and Polignano a Mare’s white houses on a cliff, and warns that Lama Monachile, Polignano’s cove, is always very crowded in summer. Seven of our 13 stays are masserie, and eight host weddings.

Lecce and the North Salento coast is the area for a city. Italia.it describes Lecce’s 17th-century buildings in a blond local stone and calls the Basilica di Santa Croce the most significant example of Lecce baroque. Seven of our nine stays are in the city, two on the coast at Melendugno, and prices run across all five bands.

Otranto and the Adriatic Salento has 13 stays in five comuni, nine of them in Otranto itself. Five are masserie and three are palazzi, estimated bands run from 2 to 4, five confirm a spa and four host weddings. The area also takes in Castro and Tricase, where we have no stay yet.

Gallipoli and the Ionian Salento faces the other sea. Eleven of our 13 stays confirm a pool, six a spa, and four are boutique hotels. Palazzo Colombo, Palazzo Flora and Palazzo Presta, all in Gallipoli, confirm they open from March to November.

Santa Maria di Leuca and the Cape is the southern tip of the region. Our ten stays here are in six comuni and of six types, from a masseria to a villa, and three confirm a spa. One of them, Tenuta Montirò, gives Santa Maria di Leuca itself as its locality.

Which of the six newer areas suits you, and which does not?

Each newer area suits one kind of trip best. The Gargano suits a family sea holiday, Bari and Trani a short city break, the Alta Murgia inland countryside, Taranto wine and weddings, Brindisi a night at either end of a trip, and the Foggia area a small-budget trip inland. None replaces the Valle d’Itria or Lecce as a first-trip base.

The Gargano has 12 stays in six comuni, from Vieste to Monte Sant’Angelo and the Isole Tremiti. All 12 confirm a pool, five a private beach or beach club, and seven accept pets, with estimated prices in bands 1 and 2. Look elsewhere for trulli, a baroque city or a high-end masseria week.

Bari and Trani suits a short break, with Bari airport nearest. Its 12 stays are four hotels, four palazzi, two masserie, a boutique hotel and a resort.

Six confirm a spa, including the thermal one at Margherita di Savoia, and ten are in the by-the-sea collection. Skip it for a pool week: three confirm a pool and none a private beach.

The Alta Murgia is inland: seven of its ten stays are masserie, six host weddings, and Castel del Monte, in the comune of Andria, has been a UNESCO property since 1996. It is also where our stays sit nearest to Matera, as Puglia and Matera shows. Pools and spas are scarce here: two stays confirm a pool and one a spa.

Taranto and the Ionian coast suits wine and weddings. Italia.it calls Manduria the home of Primitivo wine, and eight of the 12 stays host weddings. None confirms a private beach, and all 12 sit in bands 1 and 2, so a high-end week belongs elsewhere.

Brindisi and the Messapian towns suits a late landing or an early flight, since six of its 13 stays are in Brindisi itself, with masserie in Mesagne and Oria. It has the one adults-only stay on the Edit, Masseria Palombara. It is a poor fit for the sea, since none confirms a private beach or beach club.

Foggia and the Monti Dauni is small and inland. All 11 stays are in band 1, five accept pets, and two, Peppe Zullo and Posta Guevara, run cooking schools. For the beach or a pool week, pick another area: five confirm a pool.

Where should I stay for a first trip with a car?

Start in the north, in the Valle d’Itria or an area next to it. Our area records list the Valle d’Itria as a neighbor of Fasano and Savelletri, Ostuni, and Monopoli and Polignano, so a base there puts trulli, white towns and the Adriatic coast within reach. Thirteen of its 18 stays confirm a pool, in bands 1 to 3.

If the sea matters more than the towns, look at Fasano and Savelletri or Monopoli and Polignano. Fasano and Savelletri has three stays that confirm a private beach: Masseria Calderisi, Masseria Torre Coccaro and Canne Bianche Lifestyle Hotel. Monopoli and Polignano gives you two old towns on the sea, and one private beach club at Il Melograno.

If you would rather stay in a city and drive out to the coast, Lecce is the base. Two of our stays are on the coast in the comune of Melendugno, at Torre dell’Orso and San Foca.

Which area suits beaches, food, a city, weddings or families?

Gargano and Fasano and Savelletri lead for a private beach, Lecce for a city, Monopoli and Polignano and Taranto for weddings, the Gargano and Gallipoli for families, and the Gargano for pets.

If you want Look first at Why, from our data
A private beach or beach club Gargano, Fasano and Savelletri Five and three stays confirm one
The sea close by Bari and Trani, Gallipoli, Gargano Ten, nine and nine stays are in the by-the-sea collection
A baroque city Lecce Seven of its nine stays are in the city
A spa Fasano and Savelletri, Monopoli and Polignano, Bari and Trani Seven, six and six stays confirm a spa
A wedding venue Monopoli and Polignano, Taranto Eight stays in each host weddings by their own account
Five stars in the Region’s register Fasano and Savelletri, Monopoli and Polignano, Lecce Six, five and four stays carry the category
Family rooms with children welcome Gallipoli, Gargano, Monopoli and Polignano, Ostuni Three, three, two and two stays confirm both
A trip with a pet Gargano, Gallipoli, Lecce, Foggia area Seven, six, five and five stays accept pets

For food, every area has stays with a confirmed restaurant, and the Gargano, Monopoli and Polignano, Ostuni and Taranto have the most, eleven each. Eating at a masseria covers restaurants and cooking classes, and Puglia with kids the stays that welcome children.

For a wedding, the weddings hub lists the 67 stays that say they host weddings. For a honeymoon, Fasano and Savelletri has six stays that meet our rule. For the Region’s own five-star category, see the luxury collection.

How many bases do I need?

In our view, two bases suit a week for most trips, one in the north and one in the Salento. One base suits a long weekend or a slow week in a single area. Three bases are possible on a longer trip, and each move costs part of a day.

Pair neighboring areas to keep the move short. In our area records the Valle d’Itria borders six areas, among them Fasano and Savelletri, Ostuni, and Monopoli and Polignano.

Lecce borders Otranto, Gallipoli and Brindisi, and Otranto and Gallipoli both border Leuca. Bari and Trani borders Monopoli and Polignano, the Gargano, the Alta Murgia and the Foggia area.

Brindisi links the north and the Salento: it borders Ostuni and the Valle d’Itria on one side and Lecce on the other, so a long move can stop there. Plan the long move for the middle of the week, and choose bases close to the airports you fly into and out of.

If you are still deciding which part of Puglia to start in, Andiamo in Puglia’s guide to choosing an area for a first trip (in Italian) approaches the question by season and number of days.

A northern week pairs the Valle d’Itria with one coastal neighbor, Monopoli and Polignano or Fasano and Savelletri, and keeps every move short. A north-and-south week pairs a northern base with Lecce, then uses Otranto and Gallipoli for day trips to the coast.

A Salento week stays in the south, moving from Lecce to Otranto, Gallipoli or Leuca. A northern loop pairs Bari and Trani with the Gargano or the Alta Murgia.

Whichever shape you choose, check the opening months before you fix the dates. As of October 27, 2026, only 25 of our 169 stays confirm them, and nine of those are in the Salento. For the rest, write to the property before you book flights or a rental car.

Puglia and Matera shows how to add Matera: by straight line, the Alta Murgia, Taranto and Bari and Trani stays are nearest, ahead of the Valle d’Itria.

Which airport serves which area?

The airports column in the table follows our area records: Bari for the Gargano, Bari and Trani, the Alta Murgia, the Foggia area and Monopoli and Polignano, Brindisi for the four Salento areas and the Brindisi area, and both for the Valle d’Itria, Fasano and Savelletri, Ostuni and Taranto.

For a two-base trip, the simplest plan is to fly into one airport and out of the other: Bari for the northern base and Brindisi for the Salento. Each stay page gives the straight-line distance to both airports where its position is precise, and says whether the stay offers transfers.

Do I need a car?

Plan on a car in most of our areas. Sixty-nine of our 169 stays are masserie, historic farm estates, and the area pages advise a car for the countryside and the coast in every area, from the Valle d’Itria and the Gargano to the Alta Murgia and the Foggia area.

A base in a city center changes that. In Lecce, seven of our nine stays are in the city, so you can explore the old town on foot and keep the car for the coast.

Bari and Trani is also a city base, though its estate stays need a car. Ask your stay about parking if it is in a historic center.

How do I choose the stay once I have the area?

Open the area page and compare the stays in its table. Then read the stay pages, where each fact carries its source and the date we checked it, and a missing fact reads “not confirmed”.

Narrow by what matters to you. The spa retreats collection lists the 61 stays with a confirmed spa, the honeymoon collection the 27 that meet our honeymoon rule, the families collection the eleven that confirm children and family rooms or a kids’ club, and What is a masseria explains the most common type of stay on the Edit.

Questions travelers ask

Where should I stay in Puglia for the first time?

For a first trip with a car, start in the north: the Valle d'Itria has 18 stays on The Puglia Edit, 13 of them with a confirmed pool, and borders Fasano and Savelletri, Ostuni, and Monopoli and Polignano. If you want a baroque city with the sea nearby, Lecce, with 9 stays, is the base for the Salento.

How many bases do I need for a week in Puglia?

In our view, two bases suit a week for most trips: one in the north, such as the Valle d'Itria or Ostuni, and one in the Salento, such as Lecce or Otranto. One base suits a shorter trip or a slow week. Pair neighboring areas to keep the move between them short.

Which area of Puglia suits beaches?

By our data, 13 of the 169 stays confirm a private beach or beach club: five on the Gargano, three in Fasano and Savelletri, two around Gallipoli, and one each in Monopoli and Polignano, Lecce and Leuca. For a beach in walking distance, check each stay page for its straight-line distance to the sea.

Which airport should I fly into for Puglia?

Our area records list Bari for Monopoli and Polignano, the Gargano, Bari and Trani, the Alta Murgia and the Foggia area, Brindisi for the Salento and the Brindisi area, and both for the Valle d'Itria, Fasano and Savelletri, Ostuni and Taranto. Each stay page gives the straight-line distance to both.

Do I need a car in Puglia?

Plan on a car in most areas. Sixty-nine of our 169 stays are masserie, and every area page advises a car for the countryside and the coast. A base in Lecce's old town or in Bari needs a car less, but the coast and the estates are still a drive away.
